  • Ensures the safety of class participants.
  • Plans and instructs swimming lessons; records class attendance.
  • Maintains class attendance and course records.
  • Promotes public relations with facility users and outside organizations by presenting water safety seminars to requesting groups.
  • Responds to questions regarding swim lessons.
  • Completes general housekeeping duties in the aquatic facility.
  • The incumbent must effectively interpret and implement the Red Cross curriculum and guidelines to match those of the department, and be able to exercise good judgment to ensure a safe environment for participants.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Knowledge of: American Red Cross Water Safety curriculum and CPR.

Skill in: Communicating clearly both verbally and in writing; demonstrating all swimming strokes; interacting tactfully and effectively with the public.


  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • No previous experience required.

Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.


American Red Cross issued Water Safety Instructor certification. American Red Cross CPR and First Aid certification.


Must possess mobility to work in and around City pools and facilities; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform light to medium physical work; to demonstrate swimming and safety techniques; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves frequent walking to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, twist and reach when teaching and maintaining pool area. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.

Employees work in and around City pools and facilities and are exposed to loud noise levels, hot temperatures, chemical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes.
